On December 30 President Alexander Lukashenko signed a Decree (#618) on promoting books and reading initiatives in 2012.
Such a decision was taken to revive zeal for reading in the modern society, to attract young people to books, foster creative writing efforts and render support to the national publishing.
President of the state also assigned the Government to elaborate an action plan for the above mentioned initiatives.
Choosing books as attribute of the year testifies to the fact that the government feels strongly about the future of the Belarusian literature and is committed to do its best to keep and nourish spiritual and cultural heritage of Belarusians.
