Brief Historical Overview of the Department of Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education was established on 9 September 1993 in accordance with the decision of the Rector and the Council of the Academy of Public Administration under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus.

General Information on the Department of Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education has a great deal of experience in doing the following activities:

  • methodological support and arrangement of the teaching process of the academic discipline ‘Physical Education’ for students;
  • methodological support and arrangement of the teaching process of the academic discipline ‘Methodological Theory of Physical and Sports Activities and Healthy Lifestyle’ for the first-year Public Administration and Economics students of the Correspondence Department of the Institute of Public and Business Administration (lecture course);
  • methodological support and arrangement of the teaching process of the academic discipline ‘Physical Education of the Modern Manager’ for students;
  • methodological support and arrangement of the teaching process of the academic discipline ‘Professional Health and Physical Education of the Manager’ for the students of the Institute of Civil Service;
  • methodological support and arrangement of the teaching process of the refresher course ‘Health-Saving Techniques in the Modern Manager’s Activities’ for senior administrators;
  • research on the issues of healthy lifestyle, physical education as health maintenance and improvement, general and professional rehabilitation, recreation, labour longevity improvement of white-collar workers and administrators;
  • extracurricular sports and fitness health-improving activities;
  • coaching would-be grade holders;
  • monitoring of functional and physical conditions and students’ health level.

Professional Development of the Staff of the Department of Physical Education  

There are two ways of professional development: training and self-education courses.
According to the long-term plan of professional development each instructor of the Department upgrades their qualification either at Belarusian State University of Physical Culture or in the leading higher educational institutions of the Republic of Belarus. Methodological cooperation with the Faculty of Physical Education in Biala Podlaska (Poland) allows the Department staff to participate in refresher courses abroad.
Participation in educational and methodological seminars, professional experience exchange contributes to the staff’s professional development.

Courses Run by the Department of Physical Education

  • ‘Physical Education’ for full-time students of all the faculties of the Institute of Public and Business Administration.
  • ‘Methodological Theory of Physical and Sports Activities and Healthy Lifestyle’ for the first-year part-time Public Administration and Economics students of the Institute of Public and Business Administration.
  • ‘Physical Education of the Modern Manager’ for full-time and correspondence students of the Institute of Civil Service.
  • ‘Professional Health and Physical Education of the Manager’ for the Training Faculty of the Institute of Civil Service.
  • ‘Health-Saving Techniques in the Modern Manager’s Activities’ for senior administrators.
  • ‘AIDS, HIV and Drug Addiction Prevention’ for full-time and correspondence students of Institute of Public and Business Administration.

Scientific Work of the Department of Physical Education

Scientific work in the Department is carried out in accordance with the Plan of scientific and innovative activities of the Academy of Public Administration under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus. About 90% of the Department staff does scientific research.

Besides working on the department’s theme, the members of the staff do research on their individual themes. Five of them successfully completed a master’s degree by thesis, three – a post-graduate course by doing their dissertations.

Since 2008, the Department has been in charge of the students’ scientific club (which in 2010 was transformed into the club ‘SALUS – Health’ with its statute and registration) and the section ‘Health-Saving Techniques in the Education of Public Administration Students’ (on the basis of the traditional national theoretical and practical conference of young scientists and postgraduate students). The aim of the club is to involve students into scientific research, the results of which can be demonstrated during the annual scientific conference ‘Physical Culture for Everybody’ (the section ‘Health-Saving Techniques in the Education of Public Administration Students’).

Traditionally the Department organizes conferences which bring together representatives of different higher educational institutions. In 2011, the 2nd Republican Methodological Conference ‘Healthy Lifestyle is the Basis of Professional and Creative Longevity’ was organized and 117 representatives of 15 higher educational institutions of Belarus, Russia, Poland, Ukraine took part in it.

The Department cooperates with Belarusian partners like the Youth Centre, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Belarusian State University named after A. S. Pushkin as well as with foreign partners such as The University of Finance and Management in Bialystok (Poland) and some Russian Educational and Health establishments.

Organization of Sports Events and Propaganda of Healthy Lifestyle at the Academy of Public Administration

One of the main aims of the Department is to ensure aesthetic education and healthy lifestyle. Each year the Department of Physical Education works out and approves a Complex of mass sports events and health-improving activities.

Annually students and academic staff of the Academy take part in more than 80 mass sports events. In the academic year 2009-2010, the Department of Physical Education organized 25 competitions in various kinds of sport, unofficial matches with representatives of different higher educational institutions.
